Kuen Kuen Spichiger is a nature-inspired artist, children’s picturebook illustrator and author, and art teacher living in a small valley surrounded by small woods, full of all kinds of animals and insects in Halifax, Pennsylvania. Nature, her entomologist husband and their young daughter are her inspirations.
Kuen grew up in Hong Kong. She studied graphic design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and then became an art teacher and graphic designer at Bird In Tree Creative Studio. She was also an art consultant and lecturer in different kindergartens, schools and universities before she came to the United States to pursue a master’s at Indiana University and a doctoral degree at Penn State University in art education. Although taking care of her family occupies most of her time, she teaches and creates once she finds time. Self-classified as “scientific-folk,” the colors, patterns, and textures of the natural creatures are intricately illustrated in every piece of artwork. Look through a microscope in order to represent the precise and accurate details reveals the hidden world of them. Even though some people are afraid of insects, the purpose is to let you and me find and appreciate the beauty of them and other creatures in nature, as well as learn it through art and stories.
